Position: President/CEO



United Way of Gratiot & Isabella Counties, Inc. (UWGIC) works to break the cycle of generational poverty through educational programs that give children the skills they need to succeed and help adults achieve long-term financial stability so they can support themselves and their families. We fight for the health, education and financial stability of every person in our communities. CEO Position

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the CEO is the leader of UWGIC, establishing a vision for community impact that is achieved through the efforts of a diverse team of high-performing leaders, staff and volunteers. A key element of this work is raising funds and strategically cultivating key donors. 

The CEO is the chief mobilizer; s/he leverages the power of relationships and networks, and works across private, public and corporate sectors to improve conditions in the community. The CEO is the steward of the brand and understands her/his role in growing and protecting the reputation of UWGIC. S/he is responsible for building trust in UWGIC and its relevance in the community. S/he strives to leverage United Way’s breadth of community presence, relationships and strategy. 

The CEO is dedicated to shared and measurable goals to further the mission of the UWGIC by creating, resourcing, scaling and leveraging strategies for broad investment and impact. S/he will catalyze others' commitment to mission to create real social change that leads to better lives and healthier communities.

The position is full-time (not less than 40 hours/week), with a competitive compensation package based on knowledge, skills, abilities and experience.



Leadership Responsibilities

  • Responsible for promoting the public awareness, understanding, acceptance and support of United Way’s mission, goals and objectives among the various internal and external audiences with which United Way interacts.

  • Represents UWGIC at meetings, seminars, conferences, functions and speaking engagements, presenting a professional image and advocating Community Investment. Requires flexible schedule to attend events that may occur in the early morning, evening and weekends.

  • Monitors major changes in the marketplace, both philanthropic and economic, and works with the Board to develop and implement the strategic plan for the organization.

  • Ensures a process is in place for community dialogue and interaction to know and understand the community needs and develop appropriate strategies for collaboration around those needs and priorities.

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization and provides supervision to the staff.

  • Presents the annual budget, ensures systems of control and financial accounting that meet all United Way Worldwide requirements, accounting standards and those of all regulatory bodies.

  • Ensures the employment and retention of competent and effective staff and provides for their continued professional development, in compliance with all applicable employment policies and laws.

  • Updates, establishes and executes organizational policies and procedures necessary for the effective operation of UWGIC.

  • Keeps the Board of Trustees informed about issues/trends affecting the organization and suggests programs/policies which will keep the organization responsive.


Community Investment & Fundraising

  • Oversees the development and execution of the UWGIC’s annual fundraising campaign.

  • Secures financial assistance from individuals, foundations and corporations.

  • Ensures the development and implementation of an efficient and equitable system for the distribution of the funds available for support of community investment strategies.

  • Develops current and new programs/strategies that will maximize fundraising results.

  • Ensures accuracy and accountability in the reporting of fundraising results.

  • Seeks and manages grant funding, sponsorships and special events to generate revenue to support the initiatives of the organization and the community.


Communications & Media Relations

  • Ensures that the United Way brand is positively presented in the community and region.

  • Ensures the development, implementation and evaluation of an ongoing program of communications designed to both speak and listen to all significant segments of the community.

  • Represents the policies, procedures and attitudes of the organization to the media, government, community leadership and other community groups.



The President/CEO is a leader with a track record of operational excellence. S/he must have an enthusiastic commitment to the values and mission of UWGIC. S/he has experience working closely with Board members, staff, collaborating agencies and other constituents to achieve ambitious goals. 

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree preferred.

  • Experience with fund development/relationship building.

  • Experience in a leadership role within an organization.

  • Experience working with non-profit organizations.

  • Experience in communications, community relations, and/or public relations.
