Hailing from Saginaw, Courtney is a practicing Physician Anesthesiologist and also board certified in Critical Care Medicine. Courtney’s involvement with Alma College includes being married to the president. She volunteers every year at the Alma Grand Prix of Cyclocross Race, which has become the largest in Michigan now! Some fun things Courtney has done in the past is race soapbox derby cars as a kid, built custom wooden telescopes with her high school astronomy club, and she has sang jingles for two local radio stations in Saginaw. A remarkable fact revealed by her husband, Jeff, Courtney has applied to the Astronaut Training Program and still hasn’t given up on being the first Anesthesiologist in space!
A native of Richmond, Virginia, Jeff has been a resident of the Alma community since 2010, when he became the 13th president of Alma College. Jeff enjoys working to build a deeper partnership between Alma College and Gratiot County. He is a member of the Alma/St. Louis Rotary and a supporter of local nonprofits such as United Way and Big Brothers Big Sisters. One interesting fact about Jeff and his wife, Courtney, is they have an exciting new hobby of tandem bicycling and completed their first metric century ride around Torch Lake last fall. Something people may not know about President Abernathy is that he once won a license in the Florida Alligator Hunt Lottery and spent a month chasing alligators on Newnan’s Lake in Gainesville, Florida!
